The factors that seem most likely to cause a violent incident are sexual jealousy, money and their partner’s expectations of the women’s housework or homemaking skills. There are reasons why women are more likely to be victims. Kathryn Coleman (2007) found that women were more likely than men to have experienced intimate violence across all four types of abuse- partner abuse, family abuse, and sexual assault and stalking. This was confirmed by Russell and Rebecca Dobash’s (1997) research in Scotland, based on
There are some situations where women are the perpetrators of the abuse and men are the victims, but usually clinicians only see women seeking treatment for abuse. The US Department of Justice estimates that women are up to eight times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate partner. Nurses play a very important role in identifying and treating the victims of intimate partner violence. Intimate partner violence is summarily defined as an ongoing pattern of domination and control perpetrated against an intimate partner through a culmination of physical violence, sexual assault, and/or psychological abuse. The abuser’s ultimate goal is to establish control over their victims.
Newton’s article “Domestic Violence: An Overview: The rates of domestic violence vary along several lines, including race, gender, economic and educational status and geographical location. Gender trends: Women make up 3/4 of the victims of homicide by an intimate partner. Actually, 33% of all women murdered (of course, only cases which are solved are included) are murdered by an intimate partner. Women make up about 85% of the victims of non-lethal domestic violence. In all, women are victims of intimate partner violence at a rate about 5 times that of males.
A very large number of crimes, especially domestic violence against women make it very important nowadays to know how to defend themselves, and people around them physically. In the past decades, the issue of domestic violence against women, which is physical, psychological, and sexual violence in an intimate partnership has not yet significantly decreased all over the world. All over the globe, campaigns have started to solve this very affecting issue, and studies to explore the reasons for this kind of behavior towards women have been issued. In 1994, the American group “Violence Against Women Act”, shortly called the VAWA, was founded for the purpose of improving social service for victims of domestic violence, and improving criminal justice enforcement and intervention. The VAWA created several guidelines to avoid domestic violence, and protect women.
Domestic abuse is more than just a good pilot on Lifetime television. It is prevelant in society and the homes of millions around the world. “Domestic violence causes far more pain than the visible marks of bruises and scars. It is devastating to be abused by someone that you love and think loves you in return. It is estimated that approximately 3 million incidents of domestic violence are reported each year in the United States.” In the story of Woman Hollering Creek, written by Sandra Cisneros, themes of domestic abuse underlie the story of a woman, Cleofilas, falls in love and marries a man, Juan Pedro, who is physically and emotionally abusive to her during the course of their marriage.
Examine the patterns of, and reasons for, domestic violence. Domestic abuse, by definition, is any type of mental or physical abuse that takes place within an intimate relationship, and forms a pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour. Domestic violence accounts for almost one sixth of all violent crimes ,according to the British Crime Survey(BCS), and has been found to follow particular social patterns. For example; Women’s Aid statistics show that most victims or domestic abuse are women, and almost a quarter of all women have been assaulted by a partner at least once, Mirrelles-Black found that ninety-nine percent of recorded incidents against women are committed by men, and Walby and Allen discovered that poverty and youth(under thirty) are the most likely candidates to experience domestic abuse. Official statistics have resulted in far less crime than reported in the BCS, and can be seen as unreliable evidence for patterns and trends, due to; not all incidents being reported, police being reluctant to record instances that are, due to e regular lack of evidence and trivial approach, and agencies and authorities trying to stay out of private affairs, adopting the opinion that families are positive things, and the victims can always leave is necessary.
-According to the US Department of Justice, 2001, intimate partner violence (IPV) does not stop as couples grow older. Women between the ages of 45 and 49 are more likely to be murdered by their partners, more so, are any other age groups. Middle-aged and older women that have been victim to domestic violence are at a higher overall mortality than those who have not (Baker, LaCroix, Wu, Cochrane, Wallace, & Woods, 2009). The wife is the client family member who is experiencing the lifecycle stage. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a term that usually encompasses violence perpetrated by any relationship partner, not just a spouse (Campbell, 2004).
If they observed domestic violence with their parents they may feel that it is normal or okay. All these factors make the statistics show a false picture, as in most cases they are an underestimate of the actual amount of domestic violence. However it is clear the pattern of domestic violence is towards women as the victims and men as the offenders. There could be several reasons for domestic violence, Firstly, Social stress could cause domestic violence. Stress maybe increased when a person is living in a family situation with increased pressures.
Therefore, culture and socialization can be major influences when it comes to domestic violence. The advancement in cultural abuse is growing larger in numbers and happening right in our community. While estimates are that approximately one and a half million American women experience a serious assault by their partner in a twelve month period, domestic violence among immigrant refugee women are more prevalent. (Yale Law Journal,102(6) 1401-1430) It is easy to understand the battered immigrant refugee women may encounter communication, cultural, legal, social and economic barriers. Cultural acceptance of abusive behavior, lack of usual familial, community support and social isolation may lead to tolerance of acceptance that battering is the norm.
This is why sex trafficking is a huge segment of all women and children trafficked. Unfortunately, sex businesses thrive in all different types of areas and some are actually legal but many are secret and hidden behind or in other businesses. Street prostitution, brothels, escort services, and massage parlors are all different ways that women are exploited for sexual favors. According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, around 83percent of the reported human trafficking incidents involved allegations of sex trafficking. Labor trafficking accounted for 12 percent of incidents, and other or unknown forms of human trafficking made up the remaining five percent; about a third of these incidents involved sex trafficking of children (January 2009).
