Examine the evidence for the decline of religion in the United Kingdom. (30 marks) It has been noted from looking at data and by many other methods that there is a decline in religion in the United Kingdom. The UK is becoming Secular. Secularisation is known as the loss of dominance of religion over society. Secularisation is hard to define and has many meanings but the most recognised definition is from Brian Wilson who says that secularisation is ‘the process whereby religious thinking, practise and institutions lose social significance.’ We can notice that there is a decline in religion in the UK in many ways and will explore in detail each individual way throughout this essay. We can see from statistics and recent census’s that different denominations are declining in different ways. We can tell that Christians are still the greater population of the UK but have declined by 12.5% between the 2001 census and the 2011 one. And that Buddhism is still the least population of the UK but have not declined but gone up by 0.1%. Although statistics are not always reliable as many people have left the religious part blank in their census so we do not have a clear idea of who is and who is not religious. Since 1968 the belief in a god of any sort has decreased and the belief in no god has increased rapidly. This could be because of more recent findings and evidence of scientifical knowledge to counter act with religious ideas (known as rationalisation). And as a lot of people like to see evidence and religion cannot give them all the evidence they need and science can they may have lost their faith in God. Science is also in the media a lot so more people are seeing it and believing it rather than believing in their religion. Disengagement is another key aspect of why religion is declining in the UK.
