REVOLUTION OF RAV4 Toyota RAV 41 is a car with 4-wheel drive and a crossover between a sports wagon and elegance, commonly referred to as Soft-roader in the motor world. From an underpowered car to a sports one, RAV4 evolution which is in its third generation is destined to greater heights. Toyota Motor Company, INC began selling the RAV4 in Japan on May 1994 with the highest sales immediately. This led to the introduction of this sports car in USA market in 1996 with improved features including a 2.0L and 16 Valve four-cylinder engine which was originally in the second generation of Camry (another Toyota make). RAV4s were made available in two or four door body styles and with either five-speed manual or four speed automatic transmissions. It has a full-time all-wheel-drive system, and offered an optional locking centre differential. Toyota RAV4’s size, four wheel-drive, wide stance and short front and rear overhangs (project over) made for maneuverability both on and off road and in all weather conditions. They are designed with safety equipment allowing them to be called passenger cars rather than trucks. These includes dual airbags, adjustable three-point seatbelts and enhanced side-impact protection. The four door models also includes child-proof rear door locks. By combining conventional passenger car elements with features of a light, off-road vehicle, RAV 4 was called the new concept of SUV2. This provided Toyota and its customers with an attractive entry into the growing sport utility market. According to Motor Week Magazine, Popular Science Magazine and Edison American Association, 1996, these features made RAV 4 to be voted and awarded the “Drivers Choice Award-Best Mini-SUV”, “Best of What is New” and “Best New Products-Silver Award” in USA respectively.
