Evidence Based Practice in Adult Nursing The aim of this assignment is to critique a piece of quantitative nursing research, by identifying and commenting on the purpose and relevance of the study, the research design and the methodology employed. Firstly it will illustrate how to locate and retrieve evidence relating to the specific topic. A systematic evaluation of one research paper titled: Randomised Clinical Trial Comparing the Efficacy of Two Bandaging Regimens in the Treatment of Venous Leg Ulcers (Meyers et al, 2002) will be carried out. Initially the meaning of critique will be defined and the importance of research critique to nursing will be briefly described. Elements of a recognised framework by Cormack (2000) will be used as a guideline through the critique process.
Research is defined as the use of systematic inquiry methods to answer questions and problem solve (Polit & Beck, 2008). Research can sometimes be difficult to obtain, meaning, some areas that you wish to research could be seen as unethical, some studies may be inconclusive as to which method of practice is the best and sometimes there will just not be enough research evidence to help you decide which way to base your practice (Aveyard & Sharpe, 2009). There is heavy support for the use of evidence based practice within nursing (Polit & Beck, 2008) indicating that research is of fundamental importance to maintaining the best possible standards for nursing practice in regards to clinically appropriate actions, cost effective methods an positive patient experiences and
Running head: CRITIQUE OF SYSTEMATIC RESEARCH REVIEW (SRR) 1 A Systematic Research Review: To what extent do nurses use research in clinical practice? Sindiswa Michel Chamberlain College of Nursing NR505: Advanced Research Methods: Evidence-Based Practice Spring A, 2014 CRITIQUE OF SYSTEMATIC RESEARCH REVIEW (SRR) 2 The nursing research problem addressed in the Systematic research Review is, To what extent do nurses use research in clinical practice? This systematic research review is relevant to nursing practice in that the nursing profession is now recognizing the importance of research as a need for quality improvement in providing nursing care to our patients. The researchers used a systematic review of RCTs. They chose experimental designs which included Random control Trials, clinical trials, and quasi-experimental studies.
Based on these two premise, communication in nursing focuses on attending, listening, intervening and exploring the contents of information while observing the feelings of the patient (Arnold and Boggs, 2009, pp37-38). This piece of work will evaluate different aspects of my own learning; focusing on the importance of good communication and its influence in clinical practice. Throughout the essay, the significance of different communication skills will be explored. The essay will also evaluate different aspects of personal and professional values and their relevance in clinical practice. References will be made to some health related legislations such as; The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code of conduct, Care Quality Commission (CQC), Francis Report, Department of Health (DoH), The National Health Service (NHS) constitution and the fundamental values of care (Six C’s).
The first sentence of the introduction explores the issue of anger and violence being higher in individuals who abuse substances. This statement is based on other research from other sources, proving that it is a problem area to be investigated. When writing a journal article, it is common for researchers to provide conceptual definitions of key terms (Pyrczak, 2008). The authors in this article discuss the concept of forgiveness therapy, clearly defining the concept for readers. They explain the process of forgiveness therapy as well.
Research Article Analysis Paper Abstract The abstract is a detailed description including the study problem, the particular patient population studied, the method of study used and a brief description of the results. The authors present the question and significant results of that question within the abstract. The abstract would have been strengthened by clearly stating the sample size and conclusion of the research. Introduction The authors of the research article found it important to educate nurses directly working with renal disease on end-of-life issues. They felt these patients were not getting proper education and assistance ensuring the wishes were being carried out.
It was interesting to read in this article of the need for LTC and health professions schools to create a partnership that might encourage nursing students to focus their attention to LTC settings and even to enter innovative academic programs. This McConnell (et al, 2010) suggests might possibly move the problem faced by the shortage of RNs in LTC from its status as “mission impossible” to “mission
Give one alternative way to reword the thesis so that it is more argumentative and specific. On my way to becoming a nurse, I find that understanding lawsuits is very important. Make two (2) specific suggestions to assist the author in providing a better sense of direction in his/her introduction. The Main idea seems to be mostly about lawsuits and the ways they effect nurses and patients. I would emphasis this in the introduction so we have an idea of the topic of the paper.
The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of evidence based research on nursing practice, define EBP, explain the importance of EBP research to improve nursing practice, and barriers to overcome in research utilization. Also an example of both a qualitative and quantitative research study that could improve the practice area of hospice will be provided. Evidence can be used in nursing practice for care processes, policies and procedures that direct nursing practice, patient care management tools, as well as care decisions of related to patients needs (Houser, 2011, p. 16). The first topic to be discussed is the importance of EBP. Importance of Evidence Based Research EBP ensures that researched published material is organized.
Retrieved from http://www.ana.com Documentation is a primary emphasis in nursing informatics, because quality care depends on effective communication. Since healthcare providers communicate primarily through the notes they write in a patients chart, nurse informatics improve the speed, timeliness and accuracy of patient charting, giving health workers more up-to-date, complete information leading them to make better decisions about patients care.
