Evidenced Base Practices in Law Enforcement

How can evidence based practices keep the community safe while providing treatment to offenders in the community? Evidence based practice can only keep the community safe and provide treatment for offenders if they are based on sound proven data that is measured against proper outcomes. The data can not be assumed nor can the outcomes of the research be unproven. In order for these practices to keep the community safe and treat offenders it needs to be fully funded and supported by all parties involved to include, policy makers, community and the offenders. A major part of ensuring evidence based practices will meet the needs of community safety and offender practice is ensuring that the practice fits the offender and the classification of the offender is correct. Additionally, the practice must meet the needs of the offender and the resources must be available in order to meet those needs. Improper classification will result in failure across the board in community safety, program failure and failure to change the offender’s behavior. The use of evidence based practices can both reduce incarceration rates and crime rates with proper support, funding, offender classification, risk assessment of offenders and proper treatment programs. In my opinion, evidence based practice can be misleading because of the use of the word evidence. Just because it is called an evidence based practice does not mean it is a cookie cutter solution to every case or offender. The uses of these programs are going to depend on human intervention to ensure the program fits both the needs of the community and the needs of the offender. If the community does not buy into the practice or feel secure with the practice intention then it will fail. The same is true with the offender, if they do not have full buy in or are placed in the wrong program that does not meet their needs
