“Every Day Symbols” The sun is the largest object in the galaxy and holds 99.8 percent of the solar systems mass, but as a symbol I think it represents glory, brilliance, authority, happiness, and spirituality. A symbol is a person place thing or object that represents itself and something beyond itself, and most ordinary objects can be the most powerful symbols. The book Lord of the Flies by William Golding is filled with ordinary objects and people that represent a deeper meaning such as the conch, Piggy, and the beast. In the book Lord of the Flies there are objects that represent something bigger, such as the conch. The conch was just a shell that Piggy found, but when,” Ralph pursed his lips and squirted air into the shell witch emitted a low, farting noise…” (17) It began to symbolize power because they could,”...use… {the conch}… to call others. Have a meeting.”(16). The conch also represents authority. Even though it is just a shell the conch is a powerful symbol. For example when everyone is being loud,” Ralph smiled and held up the conch for silence.”(23) Obviously when the conch is seen being held it is a sign to be quit or to calm down. But what the kids don’t notice is that the conch is what keeps them civilized, behaved, and organized, and throughout the story that slowly fades away. All symbols don’t have to be objects, some can be people, and for example Piggy represents the voice of reason. In the story Lord of the Flies there are people that are symbols too; one of the many is Piggy. Piggy is symbolized as the voice of reason. When they decide to build a fire and the littluns run up the hill,” Piggy’s breathe was quite restored. Like kids! Acting like a crowd of kids! Piggy watched in disgust,” (38). Literally Piggy is scolding the kids for running up the hill like mindless masses. Symbolically Piggy is a reminder of conformity when he calls
