You need to identify five different skills that an event manager needs to possess and write 300 words on each. This 300 words needs to identify what the skill is (this must be related to academic literature) and also how this skill has manifested itself within an event management related case study (this can be drawn from academic literature, the broadsheet press or other reputable sources, but NOT about your own event). Introduction Event Management is a fast growing career path, with more jobs being available in this industry now. There are so many skills needed to be successful as an event manager, Mehndiratta (2009), claims that event management is a profession which demands a lot of hard work, a high degree of energy, good communication skills, strong networking, excellent PR skills, leadership qualities, market awareness and a lot of creativity. Communication and People Skills As an event manager it is very important to have great communication and people skills, this is due to the fact an event manager should be able to make agreements with individuals for various things such as sponsorship when hosting an event (Royal and Jago, 1998). Learning to be courteous and polite to all clients goes a long way; if one client finds an event manager easy to work with they will then recommend them to other potential clients which can lead to an increase in business and revenue for the events manager. Communication ties in with the ability to work well as part of a team which is very important in the events management industry, without a good team an event isn’t as likely to be successful (Stevens, 1994). Communicating well with a team will result in the whole team knowing exactly what their place is in the event and what their duties and responsibilities will be, this relates into organizational skills which is another key skill for an event manager.
