Europeanization Affects on Turkish Migration Policy (Hypo)Thesis: The Europeanization of Turkish policy has most definitely affected domestic policy, especially that of migration. If Turkey is integrated into the EU, it will affect EU migration flows because it is still seen as a 'wild card' for the EU. I believe Turkish borders are not as restricted and secure as those of European countries, which allows illegal migration into Turkey. Illegal migration can allow persons that the EU does not want due to illegal migration's assumed association with criminal activity, human trafficking, along with other issues. The Iraq War is thought to have increase illegal immigration into Turkey; also, Turkey receives many economic migrants from nearby states such as, Georgia, Afghanistan, and Azerbaijan. There is also the Kurdish issue to examine when looking at Turkish domestic issues on migration. Turkey has good relations with non-Turk Kurds such as Syrian or Iraqi, however still face major dilemmas with Kurds within its borders. How will this affect EU migration? For these reasons, I believe if Turkey is accepted as an EU member, EU migration flows will most definitely be affected. I have listed the class topics/readings I will be referring to in my paper. With these topics I will address the notions of migration as it relates to: international and state migration policies, nation-building, politics of belonging, identity politics, and security. I feel these topics will show evidence of how EU and Turkish migration policy has evolved, along with addressing the issue of politics of belonging and identity in Turkey for the Kurdish diaspora and for Turkey within the EU. The idea of security is most important issue that is to be addressed, since this directly affects the EU if Turkey is to be accepted.
