Ethnography Research Paper- Nuer Journeys, Nuer Lives 2- Discuss three ways that language has made adjustment to the United States difficult. Be specific and be sure to illustrate your answer with specific examples. We can all imagine traveling to a new land and being discouraged by the fact your taxi cab driver doesn’t know what you are saying or not being able to understand the descriptions on a menu, but in most of these cases, someone will be nearby to translate. Try imagining instead, moving to the foreign place, and having to adapt to new ways of living, almost on your own. Sure you have some nice people, who have shown you where you live and given you items to help, but day to day, you will be on your own trying to become accustomed to your new life. You won’t have that translator every moment to explain how to turn on a stove or how to work the toilet. Being unable to communicate sets up its own difficulties, but to add all the unfamiliar aspects of this new life, can cause many additional problems. The Nuer have had to deal with the issue of a language barrier and have had several main problems while trying to acclimate themselves to this new American lifestyle. The Nuer have found difficulty academically, in the work force, and in health care among other issues. Coming to America, the Nuer are already familiar with the importance of education. Men, women, and children alike, want to succeed academically because they know it will give them better opportunities for well paying jobs and if they ever go back to Sudan, there diploma or degree will be well respected and earn them prestige. Unfortunately, it is not as easy for the Nuer to be placed in school as it is for the typical American. The Nuer are inexperienced in the English language with most women and children never having formal English training and only some of the men having some experience
