Alex Franklin was APEX’s project manager, a local computer company that provides software solutions to financial institutions, particularly banks. APEX was one of the major players that controlled almost 35 percent of the market. Alex Franklin advanced very quickly and had a chance of more promotion if he would bring more business. To get his promotion he had to bring First Street Bank into APEX’s business. First Street Bank had a solid reputation for overall financial health and integrity. First Street Bank was a major client to APEX that would save its future. Alex Franklin worked with two younger new hires that would assist him. First Street Bank decided to bid to get the best deal. Competition had increased a lot; the other player was “Computer Solutions” (CS) that had a chance of winning the bid other than APEX. Franklin was confident of winning but later on he was less sure because he heard rumors that CS had made a breakthrough that put them equal to or ahead of APEX in terms of their company’s sophisticated technology. During the bidding process Alex Franklin worked with Sean McBride, vice president of First Street Bank. Two days before the final bid deadline, Franklin received a call from McBride to meet with him and his two coworkers. While the meeting McBride placed a large folder, visible to all in bright, bold letters “Computer Solutions” on a coffee table. Franklin realized what McBride was offering him; now it was up to him to choose.
            The first ethical issue here is that is it right for Franklin to win the bid by seeing what “Computer Solutions” had bid? Is it right for him to get business for APEX that is based on compromising his own integrity? Is it the right way to present himself in front of his young colleagues? The second ethical issue here is that if Franklin chooses what McBride has offered, is it right for him to get a promotion that is based on questionable ethics?
