State Regulation and Nursing Standard
According to the Florida Statute 464.003.20 (a) a registered professional nurse is required to apply the nursing process along with addressing the psychological, biological, and physical and social science needs of the patient. The nursing process includes observation, assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation of care; health teaching and counseling of the ill, injured, or infirm; and the promotion of wellness, maintenance of health, and prevention of illness of others. The nurse is also responsible for providing supervision and teaching of other personnel in the theory and performance of the acts (Florida Statutes 2012).
A1. Implications of Law In the scenario, the patient appears to be fearful. We must also consider his decreased oxygen saturation of 88% and his pass diagnosis of being mildly developmentally delayed. It’s possible that the patient was having increased challenges with understanding why he should be placed on the ventilator. The nurse is an advocate for the patient and should ensure that an individual patient’s wishes are respected by those providing care and interventions. Oftentimes we have found it challenging to speak with the physician about patient’s wishes but it is the nurse’s responsibility to speak up for the patient. In this scenario, the nurse could have taken the time to talk with the patient. Perhaps this would have calmed his fears (ANA 2013).
As a nurse, we must learn to address not only the patient’s physical needs but we must be sensitive to their emotional and spiritual needs. We must be willing to educate the patient concerning their decision and the implications of advanced directives, especially when a history of
