This essay first of all, will define and discuss the key characteristics of effective nursing leadership. Secondly, it will look into the importance of these characteristics in a nursing context and it will be supported by examples observed by a student nurse during the practicum. Finally, this essay will examine the student nurse’s areas of strength and areas for further improvement.
Daley, Speedy & Jackson (2010) states that “leadership is an attribute of an individual to work with, inspire and motivate others to work towards a defined goal or mission” (p. 265). In addition leadership is all about managing to deal with changes (Sullivan & Garland, 2010). Furthermore, the importance of leadership is to have abilities to influence other people. As Lansdale (2002) asserts, leadership is working “in the same direction, towards the same destination, at the same speed not because they have been forced to, but because they want to” (as cited in Whitehead, Weiss & Tappen, 2007, p.5).
Leadership is the process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task. A leader in nursing profession requires the same common qualities as any influential person in any other line of work. But, as observed by the student nurse during practicum and after reading the scholarly discourses in the reference list, the following characteristics seem especially necessary for a nursing leader to possess: communication, inter-personal skill, mentoring, delegation and integrity.
According to Bach & Ellis (2011), understanding communication and developing good communication skills are critical to effective nursing leadership. “People often assume that communication is simply giving information to another person” (Whitehead et al., 2007, p. 80).
