Argumentative Essay - Practice Essay Plan Candy, Crooks and Curley’s wife have many important similarities. Argue for or against statement. 1st Paragraph: Intro Warmer: Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men is set in the 1930s American Depression. It was a time where the equal rights for people is not fully protected. People who are ‘different’ are often discriminated, such as their age, race and gender. These prejudices are reflected in the characters of Candy, Crooks and Curley’s wife. Thesis: This essay will explore ways in which they share similarities important to the novel, including discrimination, dreams and loneliness. 2nd Paragraph: All three are discriminated P: Firstly, Candy, Crooks and Curley’s wife are considered the ‘weak’ ones. These characters are all discriminated against because of their disadvantage. Eg: Candy is discriminated because of his disability and also his age, as he said himself, ‘I ain’t much good with on’y one hand’ (p59) and he knows that the boss will fire him ‘as soon as I can’t swamp out no bunkhouses’ (p60). Ex: Candy is disabled; he lost his hand so he works as a swamper, and as he gets old, he becomes less and less productive, and eventually gets fired. This is foreshadowed by the death of his dog, his companion, being killed by Carlson because he is old and useless. This fear of being lonely after being fired ultimately leads him to join George and Lennie’s dream of owning a piece of land. Eg: Crooks is a negro. Black men are not treated equal as white men at the age, he is sometimes being called ‘nigger’ (p20) by other ranch hands. His boss also gives him hell when he’s mad’(p21). Ex: White men have prejudice against Crooks simply because he has a different colour. He is often looked down upon and he has his own room. Being the victim of discrimination, Crooks has become bitter, he distances himself
