While we cannot dispute that Prince Hamlet is driven by revenge for the murder of his father, we must also acknowledge that there are different motivating factors which drive other main characters in ‘Hamlet’. At the beginning of the play King Hamlet is the only character who wants revenge, but this changes when we meet Prince Hamlet and his mother and uncle are already married. Prince Fortinbras tries to claim back his father’s land, which he believes is rightfully his. The land was lost in a legal compact between the two kings, of King Hamlet; this is an indication of the nature of their sovereignty. “Our valiant Hamlet, did slay this Fortinbras, who by sealed a compact…did forfeit all those lands.” The audience see Fortinbras as a brave hero.
From the beginning, Oedipus Rex was a baby, Lauis and Jocasta found out from the oracle, that Oedipus Rex was going to kill his father and marry his mother. Lauis ordered that his baby son should be exposed in the woods with a pin through his feet to keep from crawling away but that didn’t change anything. Everything that was going to happen to Oedipus Rex was set and carved in stone. Oedipus Rex’s parents tried to change it but it never worked. Oedipus Rex heard from the oracle, when he was an adult that he was going to kill his father and sleep with his mother.

Both freewill and fate are themes in the tragedy, but themes to which one caused the horrible doings of Oedipus. Oedipus fate lies in the hands of the gods, but on the other hand he still has some freewill. It was Oedipus’s fate to kill his father through marry, his mother but it is his actions through free will that he does in Thebes. Sophocles uses Oedipus to show fate and freewill together; determine what to convey the idea that either way, life will play out through ones Fate or free will and or maybe both, and lead one to what life has in-store for him or her.
Hamlet also knew that he could not go around telling people that Claudius killed his father just because a ghost told him so. Therefore, instead Hamlet masterminded a plan that made the King, Claudius, show his guilt and then he would have proof that Claudius did in fact kill his father. Hamlet's obsession with his mother's remarriage to his uncle contributes to his insanity. In numerous occasions, Hamlet will make a comment about the little time that it took for his mother to move into his uncle's bed. Sarcastically, Hamlet states, "What should a man do but be merry?
Romeo and Tybalt are unable to prevent being born into these families, stating Romeo and Tybalt only fought considering that they were both born into families which had forever been enemies making Romeo bound to have killed Tybalt, or death could have easily occurred the other way round. In the story of Oedipus Rex the two conflict with each other. Oedipus could have used his free will to change his fate as anyone can. Oedipus was given a prophecy by the oracle who gets his prophecy's straight from the gods. The prophecy is to sleep with his mother, and kill his father. The prophecy is god given so its presumed to be unavoidable, but if free will is also god given Oedipus could have easily avoided his fate and created a new one.
They didn't know Lenny didn't try to harm George at all, or that Lennie died a fast, tranquil death. If there was another option, I'm sure George wouldn't have killed Lennie. However; In the end Curly would have lynched Lennie as punishment for the murder of his wife. Only George could look past Lennie's tragic mistakes, sadly this time George was not able to control the situation. Besides, George knew that Lennie would not understand the reasoning behind Curley lynching him, he could have gone crazy and killed the whole ranch staff.
Hero’s own father says “Death is the fairest cover for her shame” (IV i 122). He would rather see her dead than to have a daughter without honor. Hamlet’s father’s ghost appears to Hamlet telling him what happened and to avenge him. Hamlet doesn’t completely trust the ghost so he puts on a play called mouse trap recalling the events that led to his father’s death. Hamlet derives a plan to have actors re-enact the death of his father as told to him by the ghost. He watches Claudius during the play, and knows from the way Claudius behaves that he did indeed kill his father. He wants to kill Claudius, but puts it off several times. He knows that it is a sin and against the law to kill out of revenge. He also sees Claudius praying for forgiveness, but wouldn’t kill him because he wouldn’t ascend to heaven.
