------------------------------------------------- Time and Distance Overcome Indledning? The essay “Time and Distance Overcome” by Eula Biss kind of runs in three different sections, where two of them are quite long and the last is a very short but concluding part. Between the two first sections, there is a huge change in the way it has been written and the mood changes. In the first part, the mood is great as it is mostly dedicated to the history behind the telephone poles and funny stories about how citizens did everything they could to stop the telephone companies from putting the poles up in their neighbourhood. But in the second part of the essays, the focus is on the fact that a lot of black men were hanged and killed from the telephone poles. The mood changes drastically and Biss suddenly throws a dark light over the history of the telephone poles, and after the change from section one to two, the continuing expansion of the poles are not mentioned once. Only two times the function of the pole is being mentioned since the change. “Early telephone calls were full of noise” and in the end of the second section that, “Bell had lived to complete the first call from New York to San Francisco, which required 14.000 miles of cobber wire and 130.000 telephone poles.”
