(Q1b) The policies and procedures that are in place to support children and young people make children feel safe at the school because they feel that are fully protected from any negative behaviour inflicted by other children. Children will perform better in their studies if they know there isn’t any obstacle in the way that can cause them stress and make them feel unhappy. Our school policy ensures that every child knows what is expecting of them and expects each child to make their own positive contribution to the school. This is achieved by making every child feel proud of the school they are in. Children’s behaviour at the school depends on each child’s attitude to each other and the school.
That is when I realized that he wasn’t necessarily a “bad” student he was just a young child who needed motivation and someone who would just care. That is the meaning that I found within Dr. Michaels statement. How does a classroom teacher garner respect? There are many methods that a teacher can use in order to gain their students respect. For example, the most effective method would be, to respect the students and their feelings before they can respect you.
Effective communication is vital when developing positive relationships with children young people and adults. Some people really struggle with their learning or they may have confidence issues, these issues may stop them from communicating freely. Treating them in a calm, friendly, positive, and praising manner could mean the difference between them trusting me and closing down completely and giving up. It is important to have a positive relationship with children and young adults because if they feel comfortable and secure with the adult and their setting whether it is a childminder, a nursery or a school they will separate more easily from their parent or carer. If they feel emotionally secure they are more likely to participate in the play and learning activities.
Children must have a role model, most of the time is the teacher or family, but if they are not able to supply the demands than the child may look up to a trouble maker. It is important to always look for the good in a child and praise them for positive accomplishments even if they have misbehaving
The expectations a teacher places on his or herself are directly related to those placed on their students. In order to ask students to meet our expectations, we must rise to the challenge of creating our own expectations that are high and attainable. Often times, teachers will not have any expectations of themselves, but place ridiculously high and unattainable expectations on their students. When students do not have any background knowledge of meeting expectations or a good example of what meeting expectations looks like, they will struggle with rising to the challenge. A teacher with high expectations for his or herself will ultimately pass that quality on to their students.
The child will respond well to this and they are likely to repeat the action to gain the praise from a staff member. Another policy at this setting is to model good behavior by treating children and adults around us with respect. This means that staff will be treating children with respect by talking to them nicely, not shouting at children, not humiliating children, etc. as well at treating staff members with the same level of respect, not shouting across the classroom, talking nicely to one another, etc. the result of this will be that other children will see this and will copy the staff members being respectful and, in turn, will respect their classmates, teachers and anyone outside of nursery.
Critical evaluation of the advantages/disadvantages of a cross curricular approach and discrete subject based approach to teaching. Introduction A teacher’s job is to encourage passion for learning and a fascination within children that heartens them as an individual, the curriculum is the tool designed to deliver this. Providing the utensils within the intellectual and social settings to encourage learning and growth as a person the curriculum has many outlines and has long been deliberated on numerous occasions, as we are on the brink of the latest version; it isn’t always what is being taught but how it’s being taught that is, for the most part, beneficial. As Savage (2011) queries should it be a cross curricular approach or a discrete subject based approach to teaching? The delivery of a cross curricular curriculum is one that overlaps and coincides classroom subjects with one another, Shoemaker (1989) identified that the endeavours to deliver he numerous strands to the curriculum entwined within a number of lessons to replicate real life.
This in turn raises self-esteem. Comforting and reassuring children in times of stress or anxiety is an important part of a classroom assistants role. Reassuring children with low levels of confidence in their academic work and supporting them raises self-esteem. Children feed off praise, it motivates them. Empathising with children is appreciating how they might be feeling and responding in an appropriate manner.
Being able to communicate effectively with professionals help to work together in the interests of the children’s wellbeing. Children can pick up on poor relationships and will become unsettled and anxious if they sense tension and discord. Communication is also the crucial foundation for all children’s learning and social development. Early years practitioners have a vital role in supporting the communication development of all children, especially those with a communication disability. Projects such as the Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) and Peers Early Education Partnership (PEEP) have been instrumental in highlighting the long term impact that high quality early years provisions can have on young children.
At the elementary level, we are shaping how students feel about themselves which can affect them the rest of their lives. At the high school level, we have the opportunity to truly inspire and make a child feel as if someone believes in them. While teachers can do so many positive things with this power, they can also do much harm (as Dr. Wayson spoke on). I really enjoyed this section of his talk, however, my one critique is that I felt Dr. Wayson didn’t practice what he was preaching here. Perhaps he was leading by an alternate example or giving examples of what not to do, but I felt that Dr. Wayson picked on many of the members of the class.
