Essay on good teaching in The Chorus In the movie “The Chorus”, the protagonist, Teacher Mathieu, demonstrates that to be a good teacher, you have to be a good person with hope, kindness and integrity. In this movie, Morhange recollects his music teacher, Mathieu, who enlightens students through setting up a chorus in Rock Bottom School, a boarding school for “difficult” students. With Mathieu’s patience and love to children and his enthusiasm and love to music, he warms and changes these problem students little by little. The point that audience must notes is that Mathieu is not a professional teacher before and he is unconfident about himself. But he is a good teacher later, just because he is a good person with hope, love and integrity. So you can be a good person and not be a good teacher, but you can not be a good teacher without being a good a good person. With hope to children, a teacher can also have high expectation to them; with love to children, a teacher would reward and praise children instead of overuse of punishment; with integral personality, a teacher would be dominant or cooperative at proper time. As for teacher’s attitude toward children, a good teacher treats children with high expectation because of his hopeful personality. In that children are always too young to know and understand their ability and limit to do something, teacher’s expectation always acts as director. With such expectation, children believe in their ability to do one thing and perform better. According to Those Who Can, Teach, “the students may behave in the predicted manner in respond to the teacher’s attitude”, which is called self-fulfilling prophecy( Ryan Cooper, p175). This self-fulfilling prophecy “affects their self-concept, motivation to achieve, and aspiration to excel”(Ryan Cooper, p176). So teacher can affect children’s achievement significantly. High
