> Carmen Garcia EAP 1640 Essay # 2 November 11, 2009     The Difference Between a Lawyer and a Paralegal Career   Lawyer and paralegal are really similar because both career are relate to law enforcement, but very different in work responsibility, educational training and salary. One major difference between lawyer and paralegal is the work responsibility. Lawyers have the legal right to suggest their clients what do they have to do in business and personal matters. For example, I was fired from my last job; therefore, I applied for unemployment benefits. Then I received a letter that my unemployment benefit was denied due to my employer allegations. I made an appointment with a lawyer where I received factual suggestions.  As a result, I received my unemployment. Paralegal, in contrast, are clearly prohibited to give advice to clients.                     Another difference between lawyers and Paralegal is educational training. To become lawyer, students need to achieve four year of undergraduate college degree. Despite the fact that competition of admission to most law school is intense, students need to apply for three years of law school. In addition, passing a written bar examination is decisive to accomplish the career. On the other hand, Paralegals do not need such long term of study. Instead, students have various ways to become paralegal. For example, by earning a paralegal associate degree through a community college and students that already have associate degree   Though paralegals play a challenging role in law, some paralegals may seek more responsibility, higher pay and a larger view of the field.
