Erik Peterson now has two options in front of him. One is to leave the company and the other is to stay and try to resolve the present issues. Let us analyze both options further. If he chose to stay in the company in his current role, he must immediately adjust his attitude toward Green. Peterson should focus on trying to understand Green’s work style. Identify what he values in an employee. Does he like frequent communication, autonomous employees, requests in writing in advance of meeting, or informal hallway pass-by’s. Green’s preferences are important and the better Peterson understands them, the better he will work with Green. He cannot expect Green to change for him. By providing Green with a feeling of confidence in his decision-making skills, Peterson will create an atmosphere of trust and respect and ultimately a better working relationship. Learning how Green wants him to communicate and handle problems can make Peterson’s life much easier. Peterson should take the initiative and set up bi-weekly status meetings between himself and Green to updates of projects and teams. Communicate daily or weekly to build the relationship. Peterson needs to remember that Green can't read his mind. There is a skill to managing up to his boss and Peterson must learn to improve his capabilities in this area. For example, if Peterson felt his work has not been appreciated or recognized by Green, perhaps he can start documenting all of the value adds as successes in a list. He can arrange a meeting with Green to go over this list and ask for feedback. Peterson should enable Green to offer him recognition by making sure he knows what Peterson have
