Thilafushi – An Environmental Threat! Do you recycle every little thing, something or nothing? Everyone should start recycling more as solid waste has become a nasty problem in our country. The vast amount of waste created in Male’ and most of the resorts is taken to Thilafushi island which is located in west of Male’. Thilafushi is an artificial land fill developed on a shallow lagoon utilizing the wastes. Nearly all of these dumps are not biodegradable in nature. These dumps have been utilized to fill the lagoon to regenerate the island. Until recently this was going up well. But as a result of increasing solid wastes at an alarming rate within the previous years now the wastes are not maintained properly and this has caused the dumps to adrift to the sea. Currently Thilafushi receives about 400 Tons of waste per day. Thilafushi lagoon is covered with wastes and these wastes are floating off the island to the outer sea causing an immense environmental hazard. The surrounding of thilafushi has become contaminated and toxic threatening the marine ecosystem, this will have a great impact on the food chain. (National Framework for Solid Waste Management in the Maldives, 2006) Explained, “this worsening waste management situation is increasingly resulting in pollution of the environment, and the generation of conditions prejudicial to public health. Further, if unchecked, the worsening waste management situation may ultimately threaten the economic development of the country, which is intrinsically linked to the tourism and fishing industries”. Now this solid waste management problem has become the key Environmental issue in the Maldives. An immediate care has to be taken about this problem or else this will cause a very bad impact on Maldives’s environment.
