Many timber companies are only worried about profit. They cut down huge amounts of forests at a time and then replace the empty land with tree farms. Tree farms consist of only one or two different types of trees. They are planted in rows and consist of trees of the same age. This affects the environment because it does not create biodiversity in the “new” forest and it is not a stable environment.
Currently, prescription costs are out of control and individuals are forced to choose between for or medicine and that is not good .There are millions of people without health insurance and the health care reform will hopefully alleviate this situation and health care will become a right .Health care should not be regarded as a commodity. The consumers of medical goods and services do not have a real choice on whether or not to purchase the prescriptions they are being prescribed by their physicians if they want to be healthy. Since prescriptions are necessary for the well being of its user, that person has no leverage from which to negotiate a fair price. For this reason, we feel health care cannot be viewed as a commodity to be bought and sold. You should not be denied medical treatment because you cannot afford the treatment.
Agriculture receives 80% of the Colorado River supply, and much of this is wasted in inappropriate crop choices, e.g. cotton. As demand for water continues to rise, it is more than likely that a range of stakeholders will become angry at their wastage if it means their own water supply is increasing in cost or even cut. This is likely to include dwellers of highly populated cities environmentalists, recreationalists. Another major potential clash is within US Federal Governments – who are under pressure from their own politicians not to change water allocations.
Modernity may cease with global warming as half the biggest companies are oil companies, and oil is the essence of life. Deforestation and the effects of global warming on our forests and trees are far-reaching and quite evident. All our planets physical features are changing rapidly. And McKibben repeats himself on purpose to get his point across: the planet we knew is no more, we live on a new, more complex and harsher
Economic long term effects are still unknown about this pesticide; therefore to use this pesticide could cause irreparable damage to the environment. Not knowing all there is to know about the long term exposure of Malathion, I can not willfully allow the environment and citizens to suffer. Taking into consideration the population that lives near and around the river and the emissions that would be released from the pesticide was a large factor in making my
In order for us, the consumers, to get all of our fancy products and up-to-date technologies, a process that we turn a blind eye to takes place. At the source of the process, there is natural resource exploitation. “We chop down the trees, blow up mountains to get the metals inside, use up all the water, and wipe out all the animals.” As consumers, we are running out of resources because we have too much stuff! In the past three decades alone, one third of the planet’s natural resource space has been consumed. We are undermining the planets very ability for people to live here.
Furthermore, it would also have a heavy influence on the amount and quality of farming. If the water were to become polluted due to human contamination, then that would result in even less fresh water for farming food. This would be extremely detrimental due to the fact that the population of California is expected to grow from 35 million to 55 million by 2050. Therefore, resources would become even scarcer, and prices, in turn, will sky rocket. Each of these components are a recipe for failure, and would leave the southern part of the state-which contains two-thirds of the state’s population-with very little fresh water
Summary The most powerful of all environmental protection laws, the Endangered Species Act (ESA), is under fire from two directions. No one seems to be happy with it, on one side scientists and activists say it fails to protect hundreds of species that may be headed for extinction because of lack of funding or political support. Property rights advocates say the law unfairly harms farmers, ranchers, and developers who have on their land what some deride as an inconsequential bug or weed. Others say that local governments should have more control. Some species have done very well, since the law was enacted, including them the peregrine falcon, the American alligator, the bald eagle, and the California condor.
Not only is the beetle epidemic killing off the ecosystem for the Grizzly Bears, it is also contributing to this little problem we keep hearing about on the news, and by Politian’s, Global Warming. We hear about it all the time, witness its effects every season, but some people still don’t believe it. The way that the Pine Beetle is affecting Global Warming is that it is changing the lush green pine forest into brown dead zones that are releasing carbon into the atmosphere. The Pine Beetle outbreak is actually threatening the balance of carbon in the region (Ira Platow 1). Carbon is a greenhouse gas, this means it has heat trapping features so it retains heat from the sun and gradually heats up the
No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.’...On the West Coast keepers have seen bee population losses in the 30 to 60 percent range. On the East Coast and Texas it gets as high as 70%” (Direct 68). This loss of bee pollination will become a problem for farmers all over the United States in 2012 when the farmers find hat their crops are barren because they weren’t pollinated. This could lad to spiked food prices and a need to import excess food from other countries, causing famine across the United States. The current event that is most directly linked to 2012 is the spike in natural disasters in the US in recent years.
