negate the resolved: In developing countries environmental protection should be prioritized over resource extraction when the two are in conflict. The value is morality. Just for clarification, I define the following: Environmental protection: protection for animals in the environment Resource extraction: acquiring fossil fuels from the Earth Prioritize: to arrange (items to be attended to) in order of their relative importance [Collins English Dictionary] Morality: a system of ideas of right and wrong conduct [The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language] 1) People naturally want the greatest good for themselves. They define good as pleasure and bad as harmful. We express these feelings by our expressions. When others show pleasure, we feel pleasure also and the same with pain. We want the greatest amount of people to feel the same pleasure as we do. With that, my stance is utilitarianism. 2) The system of morality is defined by the government making rules to define what is right or wrong. The government makes these rules, known as laws. Without the government there would be no right or wrong in modern society. We need a well-informed, developed government to be able to tell us what is right or wrong. 3) The government needs a stable and developed economy to function. Without a stable economy, a government cannot develop. If the economy is weak, the government will have to focus on getting the economy back to normal instead of putting its focus into bringing good and equality to the people. Therefore, my standard is to further develop the government and economy.
