Entertainment such as books, movies, or sports have always had the ability to draw in the minds of humans and take them away to another world where they may immerse themselves in pleasure and fun. However, the dangers of entertainment are seen by some as a threat to human society. Neal Gabler, in his novel Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality, believes that entertainment has the capability to "ruin" society. However, society has always had some form of entertainment, whether it be from the Renaissance of the 1300s to 1500s or in today's modern world and after all this time, mankind is still alive and thriving. Entertainment can possibly become a hazardous element of life, but in general, it is an important counterpart to life's struggles, so rather than being a destructor of society, it revitalizes mankind.
Entertainment has come a long way in history: from elegant theatre plays to gruesome video games, musical operas to the wild concerts with "sex, drugs, and rock n' roll" and from nickelodeon moving pictures without plots to actual motion pictures. Modern entertainment has increasingly become intertwined with technology, and more specifically, the internet. The internet is the library of the world, where anything one could possibly want is at the click of a mouse. However, the internet contains questionable material such as obsessive or violent video games, pornography, and sometimes even predators. It is true that entertainment such as the internet can spawn obsession or create a world more desensitized to violence, but that is only the case of a few, not the majority. Of the millions of World of Warcraft players, most of them don't allow the game to consume their lives. Not all the teenagers of the world are constantly watching violent movies, such as Saw, online.
