New York City Ballet George Balanchine was born in 1904 and was raised in St. Petersburg. As the son of a composer, Balanchine’s piano study began at the age of five. After graduating from the Imperial Ballet School in 1921, Balanchine enrolled at the state’s Conservatory of Music where he studied piano and musical theory. Balanchine’s musical background gave him an advantage over other choreographers because he more fully understood the music he was dancing to (“Biography”). I successfully joined a discourse community of a music class to learn the skills of playing an electronic keyboard in my sophomore year of high school. I attended a seminar in our school conducted by a renowned institution known as The Trinity College of London. The Trinity College of London offers graded musical qualifications in performing arts, musical theory and for performance in electronic keyboards, piano, violin, and many other musical instruments. Having a soft corner for music since childhood, I decided to opt for their class as I thought this to be the perfect platform to enhance my skills in an art form that I was passionate about. Moreover, the class took place in one famous music college that was just a few blocks away from my school.

“According to a survey I conducted in central California schools, celebrities can motivate children to read. Through the Reading Motivation Inventory, over 900 students in 41 classes were asked if they would enjoy reading or listening to books written by famous people such as the President of the U.S., actors, actresses, musicians, or sports stars. Ninety percent of the primary students and 70% of the intermediate and middle school students indicated they would enjoy books written by or about celebrities” (Towell). This survey shows that most of the children would prefer to read a book written by a celebrity. This would also most likely be true for college students as well since college students, for the most part, are young and look up to celebrities.
