Makayla Leite Argument Essay December 9, 2012 Encouragement to celebrate Christmas in public schools: unacceptable It is unacceptable for public schools to encourage the celebration of Christmas. There are religious issues in encouraging the celebration of Christmas in Public schools. Students attending public schools have their own religious cultures and holidays they celebrate. There is a certain courtesy that teachers should approach when it comes to celebrating or encouraging religious holidays such as Christmas in public schools. I believe that public schools should not encourage the celebration of Christmas because of the religious conflict. Christmas is a Christian holiday and not all students attending public schools are Christian. The challenge of religion in public schools is that no child should ever be made to feel like a stranger in his or her classroom (ADL, 1). A student should never feel pressured to change or be uncomfortable with their religious views. Teachers need to ensure the comfort of their students who do not share the same religious view. It does not mean that kids can’t learn about each other’s holiday traditions. There is a big difference between learning about a holiday and letting that holiday consume and control the entire school. If there were Christmas decorations everywhere, the message it would send to the non-Christmas children that they belong there just a little less than Christian children do. Public school officials need to be especially aware at this time of year that the birth of the Christian savior is not recognized or celebrated by all students and families (ADL 2). The job of the public schools is to protect the rights of their students and ensure their safety.
