Empowerment in a Package

Female condom. Two words that together make protection against STIs and pregnancy that many people have never used. The female condom is not a widely known, or an available product. In 1993 it made its first appearance to the world of sex.   It was a larger, baggy version of the male condom, which to many people was very awkward. Since its debut, it has been revised into an amazing contraceptive product. It switched from polyurethane to nitrile, making latex allergy people optimal to use this. The female condom is an empowering tool to woman, and is the only female product that protects against STIs and pregnancy. Sadly, it still has a bad rap because of its first model so many are wary to try it. However, the female condom gives woman the responsibility for safe sex, while bringing the intimacy closer, and protecting her from STIs that the male condom isn’t capable of, that empower women to make her own decisions for her body.
By making this decision, one will found out, sexually, the female condom is full of benefits. At first, the condom is difficult, and awkward to insert, but just like tampons, they take time and are worth the outcome.   Leslie Evans, the Chicago HIV/ AIDS case manager “uses it more regularly than the male condom, and promotes it to her friends and nieces” according to Tang in her article “Will the Female Condom Ever Catch on?” Clair Kaplan also promotes the female condom to clients; they “talk about the silkiness of the lubricant, how nice the outer ring feels against the vulva, and how there is even some clitoral stimulation. You prime the woman to have a positive experience with female condoms, with eagerness to try them with her partner” (Sexy Feminist).
