For my analysis of employer and employee rights and responsibilities, I chose two articles that highlighted situations where an employee’s personal views led to a compromised position for both the employer and employee and a manufacturing facility that repeatedly violated a number of very clear regulations. Brendan Eich has been a pioneer in the technology industry for the last twenty years. His first major contribution to the industry was in creating what is now known as JavaScript. It is one of the world’s most popular programming languages. Created for the Netscape Navigator web browser in 1995, JavaScript transformed internet communications. Within two years, it became the industry standard across all web browsers. At its core, JavaScript is a tool that enables end users to dynamically interact with web pages. It is considered a lightweight programming language so that amateur webpage managers can create code. It was Eich’s vision that led to a breakthrough. Now, anyone with a webpage could connect in ways that were only possible for certified programmers in much heavier programming protocol. With a passion for free and open community, Eich helped found the Mozilla project. The goal of the project was to use a community-based approach to create world-class software that could be viewed, edited, and ultimately improved by all. Over the last twenty years, Eich has been a champion of many progressive movements that have directly led to an improvement in the way we all communicate electronically. On March 24, 2014, Eich was appointed as Mozilla Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer. Almost immediately, there was significant public backlash. In 2008, Eich donated $1,000 to support California Proposition 8. This was a California ballot proposition to eliminate rights of same-sex couples to marry.
