Question : Critically discuss the significance, approach and challenges to employee involvement and empowerment in your organization. Include in your discussion a few key ways in which employee involvement and participation could be improved. Motivation and commitment are critical for good performance. In attempt to increase commitment and motivation organizations develop employee involvement systems. The range of methods of employee involvement and empowerment is commonly showed as a staircase, see figure 1, appendix 1. In our organization that provides translation services employees are involved through communicating, negotiation and consulting. Thus, employees are involved into planning, decision-making, induction program designing and other processes. Attitude surveys and suggestion box are practiced as well. Such participation is significant for employees as they feel that their voices are heard and their opinions, ideas and expertise are valued. It also encourages their rights and gives them an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities beyond professional. Every member of the staff, no matter what position they occupy, will have different skills. Some people are good at organising; some at writing up lists of what has happened and who will do what; yet others have an eye for detail. Employee involvement and empowerment is critical for the organization’s performance and it facilitates organizational activities. When a task-related decision needs to be made, for example, setting a deadline date for a translation project or prioritizing work, employees basing on their expertise and experience can make that decision promptly without seeking management approval. Staff often has information that management lacks about ways to improve efficiency. Therefore, discussions on performance are always a part of our weekly progress meetings. The
