Organizations and their employees deal with civil liberties and moral choices on a daily basis. How an organization is structured reflects how the organization values their employees. This paper will explain, discuss, and evaluate the nature of the relationship between employees and the company in which employees them. Employees have natural obligations towards their employers through contractual provisions. In addition to honoring such contractual obligations, are employees obligated to be loyal to the company and to act in the company’s best interest or are employees free to pursue their own self-interest? This issue creates a moral dilemma due to the fact that employees are hired by companies that place them under contract; but to what extent does this contract affect the actions of the employee in regards to being loyal to the company or acting in their own self-interest? DEFINE The self-interest perspective views that it is an employee’s right to act on behalf of his/her own self-interest. According to the self-interest perspective, the only obligation employees have towards their company is to honor their contract. The Metaphysical Individualist perspective supports the self-interest perspective. According to the Metaphysical Individualist perspective, all responsibility must be assigned on an individual basis and it denies group/collective responsibility. Furthermore, this view claims that the concept of loyalty only applies to individuals, not the company. Employees must honor their contract; however, employees are not under any obligations to owe any sort of loyalty to their company. Therefore, employees are free to pursue and act in their self-interest over the company’s best interest.
