Embracing Diversity in the Workplace Pamela R. Tsapalas Devry University “Cultural diversity is the idea that every person can make a unique contribution because of, rather than in spite of, their differences” (Belfield, n.d.). Culture is what defines us; it is what influences our behavior. People use their culture to judge other cultures, which can create prejudice and discrimination. The challenge is to learn about different cultures, respect their differences and value what they have to offer. Cultural diversity brings different experiences, languages and new ways of thinking that can benefit organizations. When everyone, regardless of their culture, ethnicity and gender has the same opportunities and work toward the same goals, it helps foster relationships and improves the well being of the society in which we live. Workforces need to become more diverse as well in order to keep up with the changing population. For example, the increase in immigration, birth and mortality rates, age distribution and health care advances (Bell, 2012). “Change is inevitable, growth is optional” (Maxwell, n.d.). America needs to embrace diversity if they want to prevail economically. The current and future workforce of America is evolving and becoming more diverse. For example, the United States currently has its first African American President. According to USA today, the US is moving toward a change of census where “no group commands a majority” (El Nasser, 2010). By 2020, the white working age population is projected to decrease from 82% to 63%, the minority portion is projected to double from 18% to 37% and the Hispanic/Latino working population will triple (National Center for Public Policy, 2005). In addition, Kerby and Burns (2012) state that by 2050, new immigrants will account for 83% of the workforce. With the changing population, managers must
