1. A) What are the key success factors for Electrosteel? Quality, Reputation, Workers Loyalty, Expertise, plant layout that increases throughout times. B) Is international expansion a good idea? Yes, competitive forces in India will soon become immense, and the market will definitely become more fragmented with the introduction of country liberalization efforts due to WTO, in addition Electrosteel comprises 90% of MS which is not sustainable in such attractive market. Vietnam, although with infrastructural disadvantages poses a good opportunity to be a first mover, they should open a full capacity plant in JV with the Vietnamese partner due to local lobbying and network capacities. Vietnam, also is a growing market and its in close proximity to attractive markets of Singapore, Hong Kong, and the whole Southeast Asia in general. The question is: how do they train the local population, is there a need for DIP or only CIP, which is cheaper, and probably more demanded in this area. Europe is not a good idea, as St. Gobain will counterfeit and enter Indian market as retaliation, in order to prove its global leadership and avoid similar actions from other players. Therefore the conclusion would be to first establish finishing plant, it would allow Electrosteel to be considered as a local supplier, which is equal to 15% cost discount on local market. They can look into either a 30,000 or 50,000 tonnes plant and use the Vietnamese favorable credit loan. In addition, it would allow them to research the market, and start with either DIP or CIP in order to increase the utilization of the current plant in India. By doing so, Electrosteel will have enough time to get to know the partner CMC, local market, difficulties of transportation due to its current facilities, and start building reputation. 2.
