Adam Spears 500456674 Barbara Posteman, Section 1 Question 1 23th November, 2011 Electronic Media in the Classroom The first television was created by Philo Farnsworth in 1927, but little did he know the impact it would have eighty-four years later. Since the television, we now have the incredible power of electronic media via instantaneous communication; cell phones, computers and internet. In today’s modernized society, students have become accustom to electronic media as it is intertwined with their daily lives. For students, electronic media is imbedded and woven into their learning skills such as walking and talking. The educational system has yet to provide a modernized way of teaching in which students are taught the way they know best. These skills consist of a diverse range of graphics, audio, movies and print. Students are now brought up with this power of electronic media, such as the television and internet, so why not apply them in the classroom? Media is defined as “all means of communication, whatever its format” (Reeves, 1998). Students need to be more enthusiastic about which media is being used to teach or they will not care enough to actually try and put in effort. Thus, in today’s modernized society, the impact of different kinds of electronic media in the classroom can have moral valence effects for future students and teachers. This essay discovers how electronic media can have different effects on how students learn and perceive information. Already, both university students and teachers alike use a variety of electronic media in the classroom. “Medium is the message”, as coined by Marshal McLuhan, refers to the fact that it is not the content of the message, but how the media represents it (Federman, 2004).
