Elder Abuse
As our loved ones become older they become more dependent on us or health care providers. Unfortunately they are also more susceptible to being mistreated or dismissed as a result of them being more dependent. As a health care provider I find many of these cases in nursing homes, home health care, and a normal hospital setting. I believe elder abuse is not uncommon but is not talked about as much as child abuse because they’re afraid of the consequences unlike children that have no regard for the consequences they may receive. Elders keep their feelings and thoughts to themselves voluntarily or sometimes, because they are unable to express their feelings due to medical conditions or confusion. Elders are not only abused physically; but are also abused emotionally and financially. I think elders should be watched more carefully for signs of abuse within their family since it is more likely to happen with family members than it is with health care providers.
Elder abuse has become a lot more common in our recent years and not as hidden as before, yet it isn’t as popular as child abuse. The most common form of elder abuse is physical abuse which ranges from physically grabbing, shaking, hitting, to negligence such as leaving an elder in bed for long periods of time or resulting in bed sores. Physical abuse in elders has become more common in many trusted places such as nursing homes, home health care and even hospital settings. The signs of such abuse in elders would be whether or not they avoid eye contact with their health care provider (could be a family member), bruises in different stages, and intimidation to speak for themselves when asked a question.   Yet if these signs were seen in children they would be handled completely different.
