Things such as the invention of the wheel, man-made fire, electricity, and even indoor plumbing have led to the improvement of mankind. Those are all great things that have come about, but to modern mankind, the invention and evolution of the internet has greatly changed our lives. The internet has a great presence on our lives in the United States. According to the United States Census, 56.3% of households in the United States have computers, and 50 percent of households have access to the internet. (United States Census, 2001, Table 1A) The only other electronic mediums more prevalent in the households of the United States are television and radio. What does the internet provide to the common person? The internet provides many things that are commonly used in the everyday lives of American people. First, the internet provides a way of conducting commerce. Second, it is a major source of news. Third, it is a source of education. The internet provides a way of conducting electronic commerce. Most banks, large and small, offer free online banking. (Bankrate.com, 2003, para 6) This online access can allow customers to see their real-time balance, make transfers to other accounts in the same bank, and even make payments to other people or businesses. Electronic commerce is a major way of running a business. Some businesses are online based. This means that they do not have a physical storefront that a person can walk up to and conduct business.
