While the increase in homicide rate from 2010 to 2011 may seem small there are certainly many schemes that the Philadelphia Police Department should be looking into in order to ensure that no further increase occurs. Problem oriented policing is an effective way to handle and prevent specific problems such as homicide and it is clear that other cities like Boston, Jersey City, Kansas City and Jacksonville have been met with success when they have implanted such schemes. For Philadelphia’s specific problem of gun crime specialized patrol could prove valuable and effective in reducing homicide rate as homicide is so closely tied to firearm availability and use. However, I do not think that one scheme in isolation will be the most effective plan in long term reduction which is why hot spot policing would add further success to a problem oriented policing scheme for Philadelphia. Specialized patrols for guns and hot spot policing are only two suggestions of how to implement problem oriented policing and tackle the homicide rate but the true advantage of implementing problem oriented policing is that it can and should be reviewed periodically and changed based on where the city’s major problems lie.
Company Q’s stores were reportedly closed due to their lack in generating profit, being that these stores were in high crime areas raises some concern. Statistics show that the trends are not only concentrated in a residential urban community but are wide spread amongst metropolitan areas. “The narrowing of the gap between city and suburban crime rates underscores that crime is not solely an urban challenge, but metropolitan-wide issue.” (Raphael, 2011) Although these stores were in high crime areas Company Q could have taken steps to improve customer safety. Company Q might have offered security that other local establishments may not have provided. Company Q could have offered parking lot security in conjunction with
Some examples would be public transit. Only 50% to 75% of operating cost are covered by public transit fares, an increase in transit fares would only be efficient and equal if automobile users paid a charge reflecting their social cost. What might reduce automobile use and encourage public transit use is policy changes such as higher municipal parking fees and licensing. Police services are mostly funded from general local revenues; to increase the policing cost they could enforce fines on those who fail to lock their cars, residential, commercial, or industrial buildings which encourage criminal behaviour. If libraries imposed a user charge per visit they could generate more money but this can’t be done because of the Public Library Act.
Another way of reducing the potential harm to intravenous drug users is to provide medically controlled drugs as a substitute for street drugs. Drugs such as methadone are less harmful than street heroin, partly because they are free from impurities. An issue with the public health interventions I have discussed is that it may be too early to measure. It is still too early to see the full effect of the smoking ban as it was only introduced fairly recently, which could explain why there have been no significant changes in the number of smokers following the ban. As well as this, harm minimisation programmes are controversial because they appear to condone
Nurses are also there to ensure that no overdoses occur. This program is very controversial and expensive, but the Canadian government should keep this program and consider opening other facilities like this across the country. This program reduces the spread of diseases such as HIV and AIDS, allows the addicts to seek counseling or get treatment for addiction, and of course makes for a cleaner city.
Topic: The increase of gun control legislation decreases civilian safety. Guns are not for everyone. When dealing with guns, it is key to maintain the control on this lethal weapon. Improper use can lead to great consequences but proper gun control can reduce violence and the threat of crime within neighborhoods. Gun control is most worldwide debated topics today.
His view depicts crime decreasing due to more Police power, Gladwell believes if there are more police that people would commit less crime. I agree, if there are more police patrolling crime would be very minimal. I actually agree with both sides, you would have less crime if unwanted children are aborted and you would have less crime if police patrol more. Works Consulted Works Cited A smaller point to also consider: Gladwell left out one other major reason that, according to Levitt’s research, crime did begin to fall in the 1990′s: the waning of the violent crack trade. (Thanks to Darren Rovell for pointing out the Gladwell blog.)
Some aspects of climate change may already be irreversible. Yet many scientists believe that by taking positive action now, it is possible to slow the pace of climate change and reduce further global warming. Changing our lifestyle and our behaviour will help reduce the human impact on the environment. Driving a car, using electricity to light and heat your home, and throwing away garbage all lead to greenhouse gas emissions. You can reduce emissions through simple actions like changing a light bulb, powering down electronics, using less water, and recycling.
Main Point 3: Legalizing Marijuana will also reduce the illegal marketing of it on the streets. A. Although Marijuana is illegal, it’s not hard to find a local dealer or hear about one on the streets. If Marijuana becomes legal it will stop the black marketing of it and will lead to spending a lot less money on those criminals and sending them to our over crowded prisons. B. Legalizing Marijuana here in the United States will make both the US and Mexico a lot safer.
Police agencies do not want the focus of police to be a racial issue. As an attempt to counter these thoughts and issues against police agencies, agencies adopted less lethal force weapons such as the use of tasers and OC spray. In order to decrease the number of fatal shootings the go to less lethal weapon of choice is the taser. As used, it has shown that it to be very effective most of the time but in some cases where your opponent is on some type of drug or has a mental issue that the taser does not have a good effect of them and they can still preform while getting the shock. Same goes for the OC spray, some people can fight right through the pain and it have no effect on them what so ever.
