The art of face-to face communication is vital for our generation, giving us interpersonal skills that are useful for our future. Around the world, the diverse ways of social networking has affected our interpersonal communications. Facebook, Myspace, Instant Messaging, and text messaging have made the greatest impact in the way we communicate with one another. With technology on the rise, the new ways to communicate have become more popular than face to face conversations. Social networking has become a lifestyle, just like fast food, we all do it, it’s just there and accessible. Though social networking is a convenient source of communication with the technological world today, it is affecting the psychological well-being of our society. Technology has expanded dramatically in the past decade, with the invention of cell phones, and the wide ranges of internet. With networks such as MySpace, someone can not only express their personality with a page, and explore the pages of their fellow peers, but also develop online relationships with others in a different part of the country, or even part of the world. Student networking sites help student practice the kinds of 21st century skills adults want them to develop to be successful today, such as positive attitudes towards using technology systems, editing and customizing content and thinking about online design and layout. Yet studies show that personal computer mediated communication increased loneliness for introverts, while on the other hand it decreased loneliness and increased the number of cyber acquaintances for extroverts. But what is responsible for loneliness in the technological world? Throughout my typical week I’m guilty of locking myself in my room to do homework and texting a friend when I need help, rather than getting together for a study group.
