Effects of Social Networking Sites Chapter III: Conclusions and Recommendations Conclusion: The popularity of social networking has grown immensely. Although social networking has existed long before the invention of the internet, the term is now loosely used to describe websites such as Myspace, Twitter and the ever popular Facebook. These sites allow users to create a personal profile and add other users across the World Wide Web. Some might say it is the new ‘socializing’. With such popularity and high usage, it is believed that social networking sites are making a drastic impact on society today, especially in terms of personal relationships. On the surface it does seem this way, with almost everybody you know a user, but according to the research we have undertaken, we argue otherwise. We do not believe that these sites have changed or influenced society in anyway. The only impact it has caused is generating over 500 million users, it only impacts our world the way any other break-through technology does, just like the telephone, the microwave or the automobile, but it does not completely influence society. To strengthen my argument, I shall give examples of statistics I have found. A meta-analysis was conducted of 16 studies with data from over 35,000 subjects (I. Shklovski, S. Kiesler, and R. Kraut, 1995-2003). The authors concluded stating “the internet has not had any broad effect on social interaction.” Social networking is very influential especially to the teenagers who tend to explore things their curiosity leads them. It’s hard for most college students to remember a time before social networks. Half of Facebook’s almost a billion users will log in on any given day. On that same day 65 million tweets are sent. The last 10 years have witnessed major advancements in global communication. It appears science fiction has become a reality. Indeed,
