Do you know that an average of 20-25 violent acts are shown in children’s television programs each hour (Browne, 2005) and that children, ages 8-18, spend more time, around 6 ½ hours daily, in front of the television than any other activity in their lives other than sleeping? (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2005) Also, violence is the leading cause of the increasing rate of mortality in children, adolescents, and young adults, more prevalent than disease, cancer or congenital disorders. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2006). The one to blame for this is MEDIA. Media is something that is used by actually, almost all people in the world. When one listens to the radio, watches TV shows, music videos, sees advertisements, reads magazines or books, listens to the news or reads the newspaper, and even plays video games, he or she is being affected by MEDIA. It is already changing one’s personality, behavior, and life, and the person barely knows it. On the other hand, it can also be beneficial to many since it is the source of information and awareness for most people. Media unites nations as one. Through media, one can be updated with what is happening around the world, may it be about politics, fashion, government, and many other issues. It can also be a source of knowledge and communication among different races. Despite these positive effects, media causes more negative effects, especially on children. Media violence subsists in TV shows, video games, advertisements, and reading materials that show and depict aggressiveness like suicidal acts, murders, and the like. Almost all children still cannot distinguish right from wrong that is why they think that everything they see is correct and the right thing to follow.
