Effects of Drinking Soda on the Human Body BY: Shane Howell General Goal: I am informing my audience. Specific Goal: I hope to inform my audience on the effects of drinking soda. Thesis Statement: I will explain three large parts of the effect that soda has on us through the immediate effects after drinking, long term damage to the body, and addiction. Introduction: I. Soda is the most common beverage in America. II. The average American in 2000 would consume 53 gallons of soda a year (approx. 565 cans) III. I want to share with you a little bit of information I have found on immediate effects of drinking soda, long term damage to the body, and addictive patterns that soda makes. Body: I. Soda has a horrible effect on your digestive system. A. Soda can make gasses build rapidly in your body. 1. creates a bloated feeling that can last hours after consumption. 2. Soda can cause mild to severe stomachaches from trapped gas inside your digestive system. 3. By comparison, water helps to move food along through your digestive track so that you may stay regular and soda does the opposite. B. Soda can ferment food in the digestive track 1. Leads to bad breath after drinking soda 2. Can lead to toxins from prolonged fermentation a. toxins then can be absorbed into the intestines and then into the blood stream causing multiple diseases. C. Soda has a horrible pH amount. 1. pH is a measure of acidity in a solution. The pH scale ranges from 0(most acidic) to 14. A neutral solution is 7 which is pure water. 2. Soda has a pH number of 2.5, while battery acid has a pH of 1 3. A pH of less than 4 will kill most fish almost instantly D. 10 min. – 100% of daily recommended sugar is taken in, 20 min- blood sugar spikes causing insulin rush causing liver to turn sugar into fat, 40 min- pupils dilate from caffeine absorption and more
