in School Aged Children: A Comparison of Acceptable Trends

The most frequently diagnosed disorder studied in school aged children is Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). According to the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, ADHD has symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity that create significant functional impairment to a child’s development. These impairments translate into developmental set backs in a multitude of settings; trouble in school, at home, and socialization issues with peers. This article will summarize existing research into different trends used to treat ADHD and disclose the results of evidence-based treatments. The primary focal treatments that have been explored are psychosocial treatments using behavioral management and child skills training written by Kaiser & Pfiffer, 2001, non-pharmacological interventions written by Rajwan, Chacko, and Moeller, 2012, and Atomoxetine and Osmotically released Methylphenidate treatments comparison completed by Dr. Newcorn et.al., 2008. Additional empirical journals have been incorporated in the comparison of acceptable variations in treatment and practice parameter for the assessment and treatment of ADHD in children.
