Effect of Television Violence on Children and how it Relates to the Display of Aggressive Behavior in Schools Quantitative Research Methods ABSTRACT Many factors have been known to effect children’s behaviour with regards to displaying increased amounts of aggression. However, the source of this violence is an area that this research paper will look into in more depth. Significant attention will be focused on violent acts seen by children on television and the increased amounts of aggression displayed by children at school. Having an increased knowledge of how exactly exposure to violence on television relates to aggressive behaviour amongst children at school may inform us as to the use of preventative interventions aimed at reducing school violence. INTRODUCTION An aggressive behaviour problem in the classroom undoubtedly causes problems for teachers and children alike. Studies done by George Gerbner have shown that children’s television shows contain about 20 violent acts each hour. Gerbner also found that children who watched violent shows were more likely to strike out at playmates, argue, and disobey authority than those who did not watch violent T.V. This study will aim to give additional information regarding the correlations between violent acts seen by children on television and displays of aggressive behaviour at school. With violence in schools preventing learning and disrupting classes nationwide, this study is important research that could be used to actively reduce violence in schools and as a result increase learning and education time for all students. In addition, this study could aid parents in taking more of an interest into what they allow their children to watch on T.V. By parents having more control of what their children watch on T.V, it could directly lower the amount of violence amongst school children and potentially
