Jenna Vrbanac Mr. O'Rourke ENG3U June 7, 2013 Edward Scissorhands The American Dream in most peoples minds is a mundane job, a nice house, comfortable living and a nice, normal family. The average day is uneventful, predictable and routine. Most people do not stray from this ideal of normal for fear of being looked at differently, or even ostrisized. Director Tim Burton's vision of America as presented in Edward Scissorhands is that although differences are what make people unique, society will always ostrisize or try to change those people to fit the idea of "normal". The main character is Edward Scissorhands, a lonely invention who was incomplete and left with scissors for hands. He is the best example of Tim Burton's vision of America. He was brought into a society that was used to this "American Dream", which was very boring and uneventful and gave them something interesting to talk about. Make-up was also a symbol of how people with cherish your differences, but try to cover up the differences they do not find attractive. Lastly, Tim Burton represented his vision of America through ethics shown throughout the movie. Edward has scissors for hands, which is actually admired in the movie Edward Scissorhands. After being isolated for many years in an old mansion, he is discovered by a sweet housewife named Peg. She introduces him to modern society and he is welcomed and loved by all. His "disability" attracts people to him and intreges them. All the boring housewives are excited to have someone so different in their lives. it gives them something new to gossip about, and something new to excite them. Instead of fearing him at first, everyone loves him for his scissors once they discover his talents with landscaping, grooming pets and cutting hair.
