Educational Achievements Essay

1629 Words7 Pages
Compare and contrast the educational achievements of girls and boys. How do the curriculum and different styles of teaching influence their academic performance and there job prospects? This assignment will explore the similarities and differences between the educational achievements of boys and girls. The main focus of this assignment will be on how gender, curriculum and labelling influences educational achievements of boys and girls at secondary school level which effect social justice. Gender has been created in such way that it comprises unequal power over difference within gender. Statistics show that ‘in 1988, 32 percent of girls achieved five A-C GCSEs while 28 percent of boys achieved these levels’ (Ward, 2004, p.125). This shows that from very early on in society there was a major gender gap between the two. “However there are some differences within the educational achievements which still conform across pupil’s school careers”. (Ward, 2004)For example in certain subjects likes maths boys will be the higher achievers. At level 3 and above, boys outperform girls by four percentage points in mathematics. ‘Yet in the other subjects girls have maintained or extended their lead’. (Ward, 2004, P.125). This clearly shows that even though girls are the higher achievers boys are still strong in some subjects like maths where girls struggle to keep up. Overall it is evidently proven even though girls perform better boys will still end up getting higher paid jobs. BBC states ‘that its study, of 43,000 managers, showed that men would earn £141,000 more in bonuses over a lifetime. At more senior levels, the pay gap for both basic pay and bonuses, increased’. (BBC news, 2013) This statement questions social justice in this society and has done for quite some time. This is something which influences female’s perspectives of job prospects.
