Medium of Instruction: 5 1. Country overview: Vietnam is a Southeast Asian country lying on the eastern part of the Indochinese peninsula. Bordering with China in the North, Laos and Cambodia to the West, the East Sea to the East and the Pacific Ocean to the East and South. Vietnam is also a transport junction from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The country’s total length from north to south is 1,650 km. Its width stretching from east to west is 600 km at the widest point in the north, 400 km in the south, and 50 km at the narrowest part and strip of land shaped like the letter “S”. The coastline is 3,260 km long and the inland border is 4,510 km. Three quarters of Vietnam's territory consist of mountains and hills. Climate of Vietnam lies in the tropics and monsoon. With regard to administration, Vietnam is divided into 64 centrally managed provinces and cities; 659 districts and 10,732 communes. Capital city of Vietnam is Hanoi. According to the constitution present political system of Vietnam is Socialist Republic and National Assembly is the highest organ of state power of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Vietnam has 54 ethnic groups, of which the ethnic Kinh account for the majority of the population, at 87 percent. Although each ethnic group has its own language, the country’s official tongue is Vietnamese, which has monosyllabic features and is richly descriptive and expressive.
