Educating the Rich and Condemning the Poor

Higher education has been, and continues to be, at the forefront of most parents’ minds, particularly those from disenfranchised socioeconomic groups. Advertisements for college savings plan can be found everywhere on the media; however, the poor cannot afford the luxury of saving for higher education as it can mean the difference between a roof over their heads and homelessness. Applying the Dalai Lama’s Ethics For The New Millennium’s formula for mitigating suffering leads us to the realization that the problem isn’t necessarily lack of funding on part of the government, but rather a disproportion in the distribution of education funds between students from wealthy and poor backgrounds, which in turn leads to a gap in opportunity between both groups. Thus, careful analysis of the way education funds are allocated and distributed, considering every student, whether wealthy or poor, can lead to an education reform that benefits the poor and impacts national performance and the economy.
According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) “The U.S. ranked 16th out of 23 countries in literacy proficiency, 21st in numeracy proficiency, and 14th in problem solving in technology-rich environments” (Rogers). The report also found that socioeconomic background has a stronger impact on proficiency levels in the United States than other countries. In addition, Rebecca Strauss, Associate Director of Renewing America Publications, in her “Schooling Ourselves in an Unequal America” points out that “America’s average standing in global education rankings has tumbled not because everyone is failing, but because of the county’s deep, still-widening achievement gap between socioeconomic groups.” In other words, there is a tendency in the United States to invest in the wealthy rather than the poor when it comes to education.
