Small lakes are a delicate ecosystem, and continued biological and chemical monitoring is imperative to create restoration plans. The lake is an invaluable asset to the Saint Xavier University community, providing both a peaceful, natural oasis, and as an interactive classroom to science students. Introduction The area of which is present day Lake Marion was once swampland. In the 1950’s, construction workers needed a dumping location from the construction of the future residence halls. As the crew dug, they hit a natural underground spring and the school officials allowed the spring to fill up (Bara, 2013).
The Silence of the Limpkins by Susan Cerulean is about the overall degradation of Wakulla Springs. This story begins with the narrator describing how his colleagues and he have to put herbicide in Wakulla Springs every so often. As to clear the hydrilla, a plant imported from India because of a trade that overall massively impacted the Wakulla Springs ecosystem. “Hydrilla was imported to the United States from India for the indoor aquarium trade in the 1950’s. No one knew it would become a major invader of Florida’s lakes and rivers” (Susan Cerulean).
| | Net primary production (NPP) is equal to GPP minus the energy used by the primary producers for respiration. | | Different ecosystems vary considerably in their net primary production and in their contribution to the total NPP on Earth. | Cue Column | Notetaking Column | | Primary production is the amount of new biomass added in a given period of time. | Primary Production | Different ecosystems differ greatly in their production as well as in their contribution to the total production of the Earth. | | Terrestrial ecosystems contribute two-thirds of global net primary production, and marine ecosystems contribute approximately one-third.
Mufasa is talking about the ecosystem. All animals in the ecosystem are connected, and therefore each requires all the others for its survival. If the balance is not respected - for example, if humans wipe out one particular species - the entire ecosystem will suffer as a result. 7) In an attempt to explain the Circle of Life, Mufasa says to Simba; “when we die our bodies become the grass……the antelope eat the grass……” How is this possible? Describe the process that Mufasa is referring to in detail.
* Has the ocean sink been underestimated? 3. Forest growth must offset deforestation for steady state * Greening – the storage of carbon in terrestrial biosphere 4. Biosphere is not the only model * Limitation of system models Greening = fossil fuel + deforestation - accumulation in atmosphere – ocean uptake How can we measure greening? Missing sink approach * By difference using mass balance budget * Errors in fluxes can dominate the calculated flux Forest

Abiotic Factors (non-Living) components of an ecosystem: * Fault Subsidence – Giving the lake its extreme depth and continued progression. * Dike in place on Idaho side of lake to prevent annual flooding, forces water to move to other areas. * Lime stone deposits in the lake, float and make it a striking blue color. Me and Mitch worked together to guess the overall density of each of the plants in the square. We classified betugland, salex, moss, pyrola and carex in are survey. Im not sure as to how the plot we did would be classified in the Canadian wetland system but the problems we encountered were being able to survey in deeper water as well as working around such uneven terrain. Any human activity in a wetland can be seriously harmful and even irreversible. The Fen we looked at behind Copperridge biggest fear would be man kind putting more houses or trails around it, because wetlands are fragile
d. up its concentration gradient and exit the fish. e. none of the choices apply. 10. Which kingdom has the higher carbon to nitrogen ratios? a.
Another item pointed to pesticides, fertilizers and road salt as additional contributors to the pollution problem. And even further a New York Times article spoke about the algae blooms resulting from phosphate pollution. The lake has experienced a decline in its fish production attributed to the “dead zone” resulting from algae blooms. Further, the fish caught have ingested plastic and plastic the article argues attracts chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA) a contaminant said to affect the endocrine system. This
This limits aquatic life, which reduces the supply of fish. Current policies are primarily aimed at reducing waste disposal into rivers and reduction of nitrogen and phosphorous use. These policies are subject to various issues such as increased food prices and complexity in the understanding of the true relationship between algae and nutrients. Therefore, the policies have not been effective. It is important to research on ways of controlling draught and limiting algae growth because it will mitigate further expansion of the Gulf of Dead Zone.
