Topic: Earthquakes General Purpose: To inform Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the history, methods, and the future of earthquakes. Thesis/Central Idea: Earthquakes can cause an enormous amount of damage and injuries if not prepare for one today. I. Introduction A. Attention Getter: Imagine yourself not being prepared for an earthquake. My dad's friend's daughter was born in California, but moved to New Mexico to live. 15 years later, she moved back to California. She has never experienced an earthquake before. That is why I took her to the San Francisco Academy of Sciences museum where she learned how to prepare and experience an earthquake. B. Thesis: Earthquakes can cause an enormous amount of damage and injuries if not prepare for one today. C. Creditability Statement: I have personal experience with an earthquake and have shared experiences with friends about how it feels to be in an earthquake. Wouldn't it feel safer to learn more about earthquakes then the basics of just duck and cover? D. Preview: Today I would like to share with the class about the history, methods, and the future of earthquakes. II. Body A. Main Point: Earthquakes have a very interesting history. 1. Subpoint: How do earthquakes happen? a. An earthquake is like seeing ripples in the river. b. According to nasa.gov, there are four types of earthquake which include tectonic, which is the most common when rocks in the earth's core break due to the movement of tectonic plates, collapse earthquakes which occur in the caverns and mine, volcanic which deals with the conjunction with volcanoes, and explosion earthquakes, which deals with nuclear and chemical devices. c. In retrospect, according to Berkeley.edu, from 1990-2011, there have been over 558,434 earthquakes in just California. As well as having 25,383 earthquakes averaged yearly. 2. Subpoint: Major
