Introduction Oxford Advanced Learner’s dictionary defines education as the process of teaching, training and learning, especially in schools or colleges to improve knowledge and develop skills. This paper is going to give a general overview of the understanding of adult education and an adult learning history. It will look at the forces that stimulate the development of adult teaching and learning including some examples of adult learning contexts. Adult Education This is when adults are involved in an efficient and well planned activities of learning with the intention of gaining different kinds of knowledge, skills, attitudes or values. (Merriam, 2007). Adult education can be any kind of learning that adults could be engaged in besides schooling attained traditionally and any basic learning that can fulfil lifelong basic needs. When talking about adult education, it is that kind of philosophy which is cantered on what adults are assumed to be able and to like to learn. Adults could be capable and have interest of being responsible in this process of learning so that the kind of learning they are engaged in meets their needs. Usually, what affects adults learning are demographics, globalization and technology therefore one’s needs and wants to learning, availability of chances and the way one learns are the driving factors to adult education.(Baumgartner, Sharam B. Merriam, Rosemary, 2007). There are so many contexts for adult learning because of different living standards of adults. (Cafarella, Lisa M. Rosemary, S. Baumgartner, 2007). Spencer, Bruce (2006) Came up with three adult learning contexts viz: • Formal – this is that kind of learning happening at an education or training institution. This comes with a curriculum setting associated with credentials. • Non-formal – educational institutions arranges for this kind of learning but without credential.
