Working with our Environment. The Dual Nature of Technology The Dual Nature of Technology is an expression used to identify the essential qualities of Technology as having two sides. It recognises that although, on the one hand, there may be benefits and advantages to the use of many technologies, on the other, there are nearly always less favourable sides to its use some of which may bring possible harm. This is relevant whether applied to an individual consumable item or to a whole industry and its use of technology. To use refrigeration as an example to illustrate the Dual Nature of Technology I have shown some of the advantages and disadvantages in the following diagram. The advantages are shown in upright text the disadvantages in italics. Another recent technology is the Mobile Phone. The following chart shows examples of the dual nature of technology with regards to this consumable item. Advantages Disadvantages · Allows for easier voice communication when not at home or in fixed location. · Have multi-functional uses i.e. camera, emailing, text messaging · Are useful for emergency situations i.e. when broken down in car · Can be paid for on pay as you go basis – no line rental needed. · No queuing at Telephone Boxes · Need consideration for disposal but most compounds and metals in product are recyclable or re-usable. · Need telecoms masts to work – ugly on landscape and possible health risks suspected · Possible health risks involved in actual phone use. · Carry social issues such as public etiquette problems and phone crime. · Need power supply to charge battery · Needs consideration for disposal as batteries are hazardous to health if not dealt with properly UV-B Radiation is part of the spectrum of light known as
