Drug Addiction and the Brain
Drug addiction affects so many people. It affects people that have been raised in structured environments, affects those who come from wealth, those who come from loving and caring families, and it also affects people who have not had such a great upbringing. Drug addiction takes complete control over one’s body and mind. The person no longer has the ability to make decisions about his or her life.
Many people do not classify drug addiction as a disease, but rather as a choice. Phillip K. Dick states, “Drug misuse is not a disease, it is a decision, like the decision to step out in front of a moving car. You would call that not a disease but an error of judgment.” Doctors will tell anyone that half of that is only correct. The first decision to do drug’s, is the individual’s conscious choice. However, drugs affect the way your brain works and the way you respond to life.   Since it affects your brain, it becomes a brain disease. The addict starts to crave the drug and then the addictions takes over complete control of the brain, and it controls the ability to make conscious decisions. Drug abuse is a major burden on our society, and it affects everyone it involves. In the United States, the average cost that Americans spend on drugs is 181 billion dollars, and there are 23.2 million people twelve and older addicted to illicit drugs. Addicts come in all shapes and sizes and they all have different backgrounds. Drug addiction is among everyone and it is a debilitating disease that people live with their entire lives (Abuse).
People are born with addictive personalities and it causes people to be more susceptible to drug addiction. Those who have drug addictions, most likely, are also mentally disabled or depressed in some way.   An addictive personality is a brain disease, just like drug addiction.
