Effective communication is very important for variety of reasons: Making relationships – Effective communication helps to create new relationships not only with a child, but with parents, careers and colleagues too. To make new relationships effectively you need to use verbal and non – verbal communication, and you need to be friendly, also smiling a lot. Developing relationships - it is important not only to make new relationships, it is also very important to develop and maintain it. To do that professionals need to maintain friendly and supportive approach, and be interested in what other people are doing or feeling. Expressing thoughts and ideas – in order to encourage children and young adults to talk about what they learned and what they think, or encourage them to express themselves imaginatively, communication skills are also needed.
Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with: Children Young people Adults Effective communication is fundamental in building positive relationships with all children, young people and adults. Children and young people acquire their communication skills by observing how adults interact with each other which will influence how they communicate and behave. Therefore, it is important for the Teaching Assistant, and other carers involved, to act as positive role models. Children and young people need to feel comfortable within their surroundings enabling them to separate more easily from their parents/carers. As they become more emotionally secure they are likely to become more actively involved with play or learning activities.
A.1.a. Pre-K Strengths Because of the ever changing demographics in our system this can be very beneficial and has some great advantages with our program. With more non-English speaking children coming into our system this is encouraging our teachers to learn another language. In return it is helping with the language barrier we are facing in our current days. Our system could also look into hiring more teachers with the added benefit of speaking multiple languages and creating more jobs in our area.
In a school there are many other people to consider as your team rather than just the people you work with closely on a daily basis. Knowing and executing your role as an individual to the best of your ability allows you to be a valued member of any team. It is also essential to know the roles of those around you. This allows you to fully understand and support each other. By working as a team you can gain valuable knowledge from those who are more experienced than you, but it also allows you to suggest newer and fresher ways to approach learning.
If you have a positive relationship with a child it becomes easier to communicate with them and understand their wants and needs. This will be better for everyone involved. Positive relationship building with a child or young person now will teach them how to form relationships with others when they are older and will encourage positive social skills. A positive relationship with a child also allows us to recognise any issues there may be with the child’s development e.g. speech, walking, learning difficulties e.t.c.
Positive relationships enable information to be communicated far more effectively. Working in a school this will benefit pupils when you are dealing with parents or carers as they will be more willing to get involved in the child or young person’s education and care. Building and maintaining positive relationships and effective communication with pupils will help them know and understand what is expected of them and acceptable boundaries. In order to develop positive relationships with children, young people and adults effective communication is vital. To effectively communicate we must: • think consciously (everyone is an individual) • explain (be clear, use appropriate language) • listen actively ( occasional nods and eye contact) • be true to our word (say what you mean, mean what you say) • recall (repeat snippets of what has been said to you) • have empathy (non-bias understanding of others situations) • clarify and question (ask the other party if they understand what you have said ) • body language (your own and reading the other persons) Not putting the above skills into practice will create barriers to effective communication and positive
When talking to the children I use the level that the child I’m talking to can understand as some of them you have to use short sentences as they can’t handle to much information. Talking to children and finding out what their likes and dislikes are can help them to relate to you. This can help to strengthen the bond between you. It can also help with communication and language skills, which could help their language skills. Children flourish when they feel relaxed with the people caring for and educating them.
By basing knowledge on how children develop and learn, it can help make more developmentally appropriate activities. The children would learn more, and you would be more successful as a teacher. *Appreciate and support the bond between the child and family.
